Cold Front:When a fast moving mass of cold air meets a slow moving warm air mass, the cold air will remain closer to the ground and lower the temperature of the warmer air. Water Vapor in the air can form cumulonimbus clouds, resulting in abrupt weather changes like thunderstorms or heavy rain or snow.
Warm Front:When a fast moving mass of warm air and a slow moving mass of warm air meet, the warm air will rise above th cool air and likely push it slightly. It is likely accompanied by rain or showers wherever the warm or cold air meet. It may be rainy or foggy for several days.
Stationary Front:Sometimes when warm and cool air masses meet, neither can prevail over the other. Where they meet, rain, snow fog or clouds often form.It can remain this way for several days.
Occluded Front:When a warm air mass is trapped between two cooler air masses, the cool air masses push the warm air mass upward, then meeting and mixing in the middle. The area is cooler near the surface and it may become cloudy, rainy or snowy.
Which type of front occurred this week to bring the cold weather and then snow?: Though either a cold front, stationary front or an occluded front could be causing this weather, I am guessing it was caused by a cold front because the area seemed to remain very cold for several days.
