A successful scientist uses several skills in order to learn about the world and how it works. Observing, inferring, predicting, classifying, and making models are all necessary to draw a reasonable conclusion. Observing is using one or more of your senses to gather information. A good scientist will gather extensive information through observing. Inferring is when you attempt to explain or interpret the things you observed in the past. Predicting is using information to forecast what may happen in the future. By seeing gray clouds, you may predict that it could will rain. Scientists also use classification. Classifying is the process of grouping together items that are alike in some way. By looking at anything and comparing it with something else would be considered classifying. Lastly, scientists make model. A model is a representation of a complex object or processes. While observing the enigma box, you will use the same skills as a scientist. You will first make observations of the box and make an inference or prediction of whats inside. You could classify by comparing the box's characteristics to that of something else and even make models in your head.
The enigma box has two holes at the top, one smaller than the other. It has a black, shiny exterior and a small tube coming from the bottom. Water slowly began to drip from the tube when 275 milliliters of it were poured inside and at 500, it began to flow from the bottom.
My guess is that a cork or some type of plug or hatch plugs the bottom. A balloon or hallow, small ball is attached to a chain which is attached to the plug. When enough water fills the box, it pulls up the balloon, releasing the water.
The enigma box truly contained a tube that hung near the bottom ,twirled around at the top and through the side. When water was poured into the box, some went into the tube while the rest filled up the box. When the water in the tube went over the edge, it fell and all the water in the box flowed out.
